St. Jane Frances de Chantal Music Ministry Programs

St. Jane Frances de Chantal welcomes all to participate in our Music Ministry. Opportunities for singers and instrumentalists are plentiful, no matter what your level of expertise. If you enjoy music, singing, or playing an instrument for the Lord, you are welcome here.

In the ‘olden days’ many church choirs were 30-40 strong and normally sang at one mass during the weekend liturgies. Recognizing that times have changed, with availability and schedules all over the place, my music ministry will reflect that flexibility. Each weekend liturgy may feature different musicians or music styles, but it will all still be enjoyable and beautiful.

The Parish Choir: The choir meets most Wednesdays from 7-8:30pm in the church. We usually do not meet on the first Wednesday due to my mass commitment at another church but replace that with rehearsal the last Sunday of the month between masses, from 10am until 11:15am in the Chapel. There may be special rehearsals outside of those dates so watch the parish calendar for details. The Choir meets from mid-September to June.

Cantor Program: If you wish to become part of this program, please see Janina after mass or contact her at the parish office or via email. Knowledge of music or the ability to sight-read is preferred. Cantor practice is normally held the second Sunday of the month in between masses from 10am until 11:15am.

Instruments in Praise (IIP): We welcome anyone who plays an instrument to join us in worship. Normally IIP plays the first and third Saturdays of the month at 4pm mass. There may be separate rehearsals for musicians, but you can also work independently to learn your music and often will rehearse along with the choir. On the other Saturdays, you’ll hear our Gospel Choir, which is a more free style form of music. You are welcome to join us as well.

The Gospel Choir: Sings on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th (if there is one) Saturdays of the month at 4pm mass. We perform spirituals and gospel music as well as classical, traditional and contemporary pieces. So, we do it all! Rehearsals are not normally scheduled since Gospel music is more 'feel' than anything else, and there are never any wrong notes. However, we do join with the adult choir for rehearsals prior to major feast days. If you like to 'play it by ear' and enjoy a more free style of singing, then this is for you. Just come on up on any Gospel Saturday....all are welcome. FYI, many of my Gospel singers have been with me since the 80's when we all met at St. Rita Church in Detroit....and they have taught me a lot about the expression of Gospel music.

Children's Choir and Hand Chimes: Currently there is no children’s choir but we do have the Multi-Generational Hand Chimes Chorus. Fawn Kopas leads this group and may be reached by leaving a message at the parish office. Family members of all ages are welcome and encouraged to participate. The Hand Chimes Group will play periodically at mass.

The Angels and Inspiration Music Series: We invite chorale groups, symphonies, ensembles, solo artists, duets, trios, bands, orchestras or anyone who would like to perform at St. Jane’s to do so as part of this exciting series. Please contact Janina for more information. Concerts are scheduled periodically from September through June.

Christmas Choir: For those who do not wish to make a full commitment to the Choir, please consider joining us for Christmas. Holiday rehearsals will begin in October.

Our music ministry is led by Janina Jacobs, Director of Music at St. Jane Frances de Chantal.

Janina Parrott Jacobs, has been a musician within the Archdiocese of Detroit for over 46 years and has served as Director of Music at St. Rita’s in Detroit, St. Dennis in Royal Oak, St. Basil the Great in Eastpointe and also currently plays liturgies at San Francesco Italian Church in Clinton Twp. and the National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica. During her 20 years at St. Basil’s, Janina hosted the Angels and Inspiration Music Series which featured local, regional and national musicians performing various styles of music, including Jazz, Swing, Gospel, Country, Blues, and Ethnic, as well as featuring liturgical dance, Irish Stepdancers, and more. She will continue the Angels Series here at St. Jane. Many who sing in the church welcome the chance to perform different music in concert and this is the perfect venue to do so.

Janina started playing piano at age 3, and studied privately from ages 7 to 14. She learned organ fundamentals and liturgy at age 16 when she joined the St. Rita (Detroit) Choir, where Music Minister Richard Vestuto tutored and instructed her. While studying piano, she was also enrolled in the Detroit Civic Center Theater where she played lead and supporting roles in many musicals and plays performed at the old Ford Auditorium, Cobo Hall, the Detroit Institute of Arts theatre and tent shows and parades throughout the city. She even appeared on the Captain Jolly show at age 9 singing a song from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs! She is called upon to sing the National Anthem, O Canada, and Invocations at various U.S. and Canadian military events, classic car cruises, and sporting events and often invites her choir to join in.

Outside of her musical abilities, Janina has many other endeavors: she’s been a nationally-ranked  and locally recognized competitive amateur golfer for 54 years and an international golf and travel writer/editor for over 30 years. She now does freelance work in multi-media consulting and specializes in golf, business, health and fitness, entrepreneurship and women’s issues. Her media work included hosting her own hour-long golf radio show, ‘GolfWrap’ on WJR-AM-760 for 5 years, ‘Michigan Golf Weekly’ on CBS-TV-Detroit for 4 years, and she was a featured golf columnist for the Detroit Free Press for 4 years. Since the early 80’s she has been a course ratings panelist for Golf Digest Magazine and helps determine top courses in the state and throughout the world. You can see her articles and stories on or simply use Google. Janina sits on several community boards, is Advisor to various organizations and is a Governor and Member Relations Chair for the Golf Association of Michigan. She is also on the Board of Directors for CYO, and was a Trustee for several years’ prior, serving currently on the Camps Committee. Janina is a Health Minister through St. John/Ascension Health Parish Nurse Program, is still active at St. Basil and continues to write a very well-received weekly parish Bulletin column ‘Good Health Begins with You’ in addition to conducting semi-annual Blood Drives, speakers’ series, health programs, and attending nurse-enrichment seminars through St. John. Because of her involvement, St. John chose St. Basil as the site for their Diabetes Prevention Program, a year-long pilot program which keeps people from developing diabetes.

Janina is also the President of the Metropolitan Detroit Council of the Navy League of the U.S. and serves on several military and veterans’ boards and organizations. When the USS Detroit LCS-7 Navy ship was commissioned here in 2016, Janina was Special Events Chair on the Commissioning Committee – with Honorary Chair Jay Farner, CEO of Quicken Loans - and hosted several events in Detroit and Windsor for local, national, and international dignitaries, guests and visitors, including the crew from the ship. She also helped to produce the accompanying film ‘USS Detroit: The Birth of a Ship in a City Reborn’, interacting with Governor Snyder, Detroit Mayor Duggan, and several other prominent government officials and businesspeople. She is currently acting Chair of the Motor City Navy Birthday Ball, on October 20, 2018 at Motor City Casino Hotel.

She and her husband Gary have owned and operated Capers Steakhouse in Detroit since 1982, and also owned Capers in Mt. Clemens from 1996-2007. The restaurant has been a Detroit legend for decades and you can expect a line out the door if you go. Janina often caters various events and has frequently served, supplied, or donated food for church, civic, and charity events including steak-outs, church Fish Frys, MCREST, and other affairs.

Janina is a graduate of Wayne State University but ironically, not in music. Her BA is in Mass Communication (Radio, Television, Film, and Journalism) with Masters work in PR and Marketing. She received her degree via a state Merit Scholarship and also a golf scholarship. Janina was the first woman to play on a men’s golf team both in high school (Pershing, Detroit) and in college after Title IX was passed in 1972.
